West Valley Detention Center

Since 1991 the West Valley Detention Center has maintained its status as one of the best and largest county jails in the State of California.  With a bed capacity of 3,347, West Valley Detention Center completes 50,000 to 60,000 bookings and releases each year.  This 24-hour operation provides a full range of inmate instruction programs in the fields of culinary arts, laundry services and landscape maintenance.  The facility also provides medical, dental and mental health services and facilitates worship services to various denominations.

More than 600 people work at the West Valley Detention Center many of which are civilian employees.  Maintenance crews, medical professionals, culinary staff, and a variety of support positions work as a team to accomplish our mission.  We continuously strive to provide an environment that ensures optimal safety and security for the employees and inmates, as well as the surrounding community.  We believe in maintaining public trust, while providing strong, effective law enforcement services.

The West Valley Detention Center is the largest booking facility in San Bernardino County and receives arrestees from many different agencies.  Pre-trial inmates make up the majority of the population at the West Valley Detention Center.  With the exception of sentenced inmate workers and some federal inmates, the majority of our inmate population awaits the resolution of their criminal case. West Valley Detention Center houses maximum-security inmates, some awaiting capital case trials, as well as pre-trial medium-security inmates awaiting trial on lesser crimes.

Many of the processes involved in corrections often require that inmates be moved from their housing location for reasons such as court, food service, or medical care.  By its design, the West Valley Detention Center performs many of those functions without requiring an inmate to leave their assigned housing unit.  Court arraignments are accomplished by remote video for various locations including San Bernardino, Fontana, Rancho Cucamonga, Chino, Victorville, and Barstow courts.  Inmates who are required to appear in court are transported by our Transportation Services, which safely moves approximately 122,000 inmates, traveling more than 1,000,000 miles annually.

We are very proud of the medical and mental health services we provide.  Medical care is provided to the inmate from the time of booking through release.  All inmates are medically screened upon arrival and evaluated for medical and mental conditions which could require continued care and treatment.  Health professionals are on duty 24/7 and provide a full range of services including daily physician sick call, medication administration, treatments, dialysis, radiology services, dental care and psychiatric care.  This facility houses the inmates with the greatest medical needs and includes two special medical/mental health housing areas staffed around the clock with medical/mental health professionals.

We are equally proud of our Food Services Division.  The culinary instructional programs offered are highly regarded by other law enforcement agencies throughout the state.  Our Food Services Division serves three nutritious meals per day, providing over three million meals annually to inmates.  Our dietitian works closely with the medical team and provides consultations, writes and reviews therapeutic diet plans and oversees various religious diet meals. Inmates who participate in the Food Service Program attain certification in food safety management.  Food Services operate 24 hours a day and can respond to the emergency needs of the department and fire service with mobile field kitchens.

We are very proud of all the employees for the hard work and dedication they bring to the facility every day.  Working together as a team is why we are successful.  The staff at the West Valley Detention Center remains committed to providing premier service to the many agencies and communities we serve throughout San Bernardino County.
