Volunteers In Probation (VIP)
Volunteers in Probation have the opportunity to gain valuable experience in a variety
of functions, and play an important role in supporting the work of probation officers,
from serving as mentors to supporting youth and families who need guidance in the
community. They may work in conjunction with Probation Officers in the office, writing
memos to the court, handling data input and interviewing victims and
defendants.
They may coordinate recreational activities or community service projects such as
graffiti abatement, or conduct programs in anger management or life skills. They
might check on school attendance, help with clerical duties, and provide translation
for non-English speaking probationers or family members. Or they may help at the
Juvenile Detention and Assessment Centers with Probation Correction Officers by
facilitating NA/AA groups, mentoring minors, providing tutoring or teaching young
people skills and leading other activities under staff supervision. They may also
serve as guest speakers conducting presentations on peer pressure, anger management,
gangs, and drug abuse.
Requirements for VIP:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must not be on probation or parole
- Must have a valid California ID or Driver’s License
- Must pass background investigation
- Must meet the documentation requirements of the Immigration Reform and Control Act
of 1986
Application Process for VIP:
- Complete and submit the application. Incomplete applications will be
returned.
- Provide valid California ID card or Drivers License
- Complete a screening interview
- Complete Live Scan fingerprinting and have photo ID taken by Probation
- Pass a background investigation
- Applicant will be required to attend a mandatory Confidentiality Training before
being assigned.
