The basic requirements for a private kennel permit are that you must have at least a 2½ acre minimum parcel size.
The following two permits are also required:
1. Special Use Permit (SUP) - This permit is handled through the Code Enforcement Office of the San Bernardino County Land Use Services Department. This permit covers the land use requirements. Their phone numbers are (909)387-4044 or (800)722-3181.
2. Kennel Permit - This permit is obtained from our office, Preventive Veterinary Services (PVS), with the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health. It is issued in lieu of licensing each dog individually. The processing time can take from two weeks to a month. We can be reached at (909)387-9175.
These permits only allow 15 adult dogs (four months of age and older). If a person wants to keep more than 15 adult dogs or does not have 2½ acres, they would have to apply for a Conditional Use Permit (CUP). The permit is obtained from the Planning Division of the San Bernardino County Land Use Services Department. This permit is quite expensive and very involved. For more information please call (909)387-4131.
