Needles

Founded in 1883, Needles is one of the oldest communities on the Colorado River and incorporated its 32 square miles in 1913.  It is considered the "Gateway to the Colorado River " for California travelers, and welcomes out of state visitors into the " Golden State " who travel Interstate 40.

The city contracted with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department for its law enforcement services in December 1989, and is one of the five cities in the high desert to take advantage of this relationship. Though the full-time population of Needles is a mere 6,000, several thousand visitors flock to the area from October to May because of the warm desert climate. These "Snowbirds" add a unique personality, and additional law enforcement demands, to this small community.

Each year, the city enjoys one of the lowest crime and highest clearance rates of any city in the county.  Our success is the result of a dedicated group of Deputy Sheriffs and Volunteers who call the city "home." The "Police Officers" working the streets are supplemented by Reserves, Citizens-on-Patrol, Search & Rescue, School Resource Officer, You Are Not Alone (YANA), Explorers, and Boating Officers who volunteer thousands of hours each year to ensure the safety of Needles' citizens.

The outstanding success achieved by the "Needles Police Department" is the result of these dedicated and professional people, and we look forward, with tremendous anticipation, to greater future success.
