Citizens on Patrol (COPS)

Qualifications, training, requirements


The Citizen Patrol is a crime prevention program exercising proactive law enforcement principles. Each unit is comprised of adult citizens who are familiar with the local areas. These trained volunteers are utilized to enhance vital crime prevention services and community awareness. Citizen Patrol units perform vacation house checks, conduct business and residential security surveys, provide traffic control for special events, assist in Neighborhood Watch activities, perform welfare checks on invalid and elderly persons, and provide many additional services that permit deputies to concentrate on other law enforcement assignments. Annually, these 850 volunteers assigned to 30 different units, donate about 150,000 hours to the county of San Bernardino.
